Iles des Saintes consists of eight islands 15 km south of Guadeloupe and are part of the French Caribbean Islands.

Terre de Haut

After a wet high-seas sail, we arrived at one of the main islands, Terre de Haut. The bay was rolly and the rain continued, with wind bullets making the holding in the deep anchorage a challenge.

Bourg Harbor

We went into the fishing village of Bourg Harbor to check in with customs and immigration. The local population are mostly descendants of Corsican pirates and therefore Caucasian in its majority.

After a walk around the small village, with potted-plant lined streets with bars and cafes and kiosks selling touristy items, we ventured along the road to the far end of the island. With very few cars on the roads, it was a pleasant walk over the hilly countryside, through farmland and brush.

It did not take us long to walk all over the island as Terre-de-Haut is about three miles long and two miles wide. We discovered numerous beautiful beaches.

We spent several days exploring the island. When the wind settled, we sailed toward Guadeloupe.

Guadeloupe

We wanted to stop and explore Guadeloupe but the weather was forecasted to blow strong from the north so we decided to bypass the island this trip. We anchored briefly at Deshaies, a small fishing village on the northern end of Guadeloupe. We left the bay early the following morning, right after our fresh chocolate croissants were delivered to the boat!
